2011 World Energy Conservation Conference Showcases Energy Saving Technologies and Energy Efficiency Measures
World Energy Conservation Conference 2011
Global attention and efforts needed to overcome energy challenges
Introducing the latest energy-saving technologies and countermeasures to improve energy efficiency

2011/08

The 2011 World Energy Conservation Conference (www.isenex.com), which discusses ways to improve energy efficiency and the success strategies of the energy conservation industry, was successfully held at the COEX Grand Ballroom on the 6th and 7th of last month, hosted by the National Assembly Climate Change Forum.
The conference, which was attended by 22 companies and more than 2,000 people, is considered a significant event that presented an efficient and innovative alternative to domestic energy conservation in line with the pilot introduction of the Gross Energy Consumption System for buildings. The Total Energy Consumption System for Buildings has been in effect since last month and requires the submission of energy performance evaluation results when applying for a building permit.
Democratic Party Representative Kim Young-hwan, chairman of the National Assembly's Knowledge Economy Committee, who attended the event, said in an encouraging speech, "If we look at the recent Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, we need to minimize incomplete nuclear power generation." He added, "Therefore, we need to stop the indiscriminate use of fossil energy, which is replacing nuclear energy. We need to minimize the reckless use of fossil energy, which is replacing nuclear energy, and we need to make a concerted effort to overcome the energy problem."
The conference featured a two-day lecture program with about 50 topics in three tracks, including energy efficiency management, energy saving technology trends, and energy saving design and implementation cases.

More than 50 lectures on efficiency management, energy-saving technologies, and design implementation
Starting with keynote speeches by Tae-hwa Chung, Director of MOLIT, and Min-gyu Choi, Senior Vice President of ABB Korea, on "Energy Efficiency is the Best Strategy to Combat Global Warming and Enhance Corporate Competitiveness," Jae-chun Lee, Vice President of Schneider Electric Korea, on "Improving Power Quality for Energy Efficiency," and Jong-hyeop Baek, Head of LED Research Division, Korea Institute of Photonics Technology, on "LED Industry and New Technology Trends for Lighting. Seokgang Lim of ABB Korea presented "Introduction of New Concept of High Efficiency Transformer and Design Methods for Introduction" and Dongkyu Kim of Samsung Everland presented "Technology Development Trend and Development Direction of Latest Energy Diagnosis Service".
In addition, Mr. Seokmin Kim of Daewoo Information Systems explained 'How to respond to and reduce greenhouse gas and consumption regulations by energy IT' and the team leader of the Clinical Bureau of the Korea Energy Management Institute explained 'How to respond to industrial companies according to the greenhouse gas and energy target management system', while Mr. Yongchul Lee of LG Electronics presented 'How to improve the efficiency of VRF air conditioning system' and Mr. Yoonbaek Yoon of Samsung Electronics presented 'Development status of Eco Heating System'.
A conference official said, "The conference was very well received by the participants, as it provided in-depth lecture topics ranging from the latest energy-saving technologies, application techniques, and excellent application cases at home and abroad, and conveyed questions and various secrets and know-how to those in charge of energy management in the field."
The following summarizes the main lectures of the conference.

Strategies to Promote Green Buildings
Greenhouse gas emissions from the building sector account for 24.5% of the country's total ('07). As the demand for comfort and convenience in buildings increases in developed countries, GHG emissions are expected to increase to 40% of the total. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously check and monitor the progress made to promote green buildings and actively promote various policies in the future.
The government has laid the groundwork for green building revitalization by inducing energy-saving construction for new buildings and promoting pilot projects to improve energy efficiency in existing buildings, but there are still many insufficiencies.  In response, the government will strengthen design and construction standards and create a green home demonstration complex during the new construction phase, and activate the eco-energy certification system and strengthen energy information sharing standards for buildings during the maintenance phase.  In the rebirth phase, the government plans to induce greening through the entire life cycle of buildings by taking a comprehensive and systematic approach to the life cycle of buildings, including establishing green remodeling standards and expanding financial support for green remodeling.

LED industry and new technology trends for lighting
The lighting paradigm is shifting from chemical lighting to electric lighting and back to LED lighting. In addition to energy savings, LED lighting is expected to lead the paradigm shift from passive to active lighting with new features such as wavelength selectivity, polarization, colorimetry, and modulation that general lighting does not have. The global LED market is expected to be worth more than $200 billion in 2020, and countries including Korea are strategically fostering the industry.
Despite being a latecomer, Korea's LED industry has been transformed into a global market leader in a short time due to the government's strong driving policies and large-scale investments by companies. However, the lagging qualitative development and simplistic portfolio make the industry ecosystem unstable, and a strategy for balanced growth is needed.
In the future, LED lighting is expected to move past the replacement market to population-centered system lighting. It is also expected to develop into a value-added derivative industry that converges with other industries and a new market creation industry. In order to become an advanced lighting country, it is important to discover small and medium-sized items that can be converged with various industries and foster experts in convergence new technologies.

Industrial response to the GHG and energy target management system
The GHG-Energy Target Management System is a system that sets and manages targets for reducing GHG emissions and saving energy in large-scale workplaces. The system is managed by sectors such as industry and power generation, buildings, transportation, and waste, and will manage about 70% of Korea's greenhouse gas emissions (6.2 million tons) in 2007. The Ministry of Knowledge Economy has been conducting an energy target management system pilot project since December 2009 to effectively build a foundation for industry to implement the system before the full-scale implementation of the GHG and energy target management system. 47 workplaces in 15 industries, including steel, are participating.
The MRV (Measuring, Reporting, Verification) Construction Project by Industry is a project to develop specialized MRV systems in line with the reality of each industry, apply them to the field, improve and supplement them, and spread them to companies in the same industry.
The Ministry of Knowledge Economy and the Korea Energy Management Corporation are fostering a certain number of industrial counterparts every year for the entire GHG and energy target management system, including MRV by industry, to ensure that the target management system is established early.
In addition, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy plans to review and establish various support measures to support the smooth participation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are relatively burdened by the implementation of the GHG and energy target management system.

Response to GHG and Energy Consumption Regulation and Reduction Plan by Energy IT
The fundamental purpose of reducing energy consumption is to achieve sustainable growth of humanity by solving climate change, resource depletion, and environmental problems caused by the use of fossil fuels. Energy IT convergence technology realizes energy savings through integration by sharing real-time information about the entire process of the energy lifecycle, i.e., end-to-end. Major countries around the world recognize energy issues as directly related to national survival and are fostering energy-saving technologies as a national core business, and are promoting various pilot projects through large-scale investments.
The role of energy IT convergence technology is to realize energy savings beyond the existing limits from high-efficiency of existing facilities to optimal operation of energy by information technology. Energy IT convergence technology will play an important role in effectively controlling various equipment and information in the lifecycle of energy production, distribution, and consumption by integrating and sharing information. In addition, the energy service platform, which is the basis for developing and operating this technology, will be a key resource for creating new business models by connecting smart grids and microgrids as well as individual business sites, buildings, and households.
