Learn Leading Countries' Elevator Related System…Expect to Upgrade Korea Elevator Safety

The gate of the apartment complex Ban-po 'Xi' located in front of Gang-nam express bus terminal. The whole building renovated as new one, started to move in from the beginning of this month. This apartment is located in traffic favourable place and GS construction company had paid attention for making it as landmark.
One of the elements that make building more outstanding is elevator. In this site, the main product of Otis Elevator, named Iris™ are installed. 79 units are installed, and 6 units of Gen2™ and 2 units of escalators are installed in the passage from Ban-po subway station to the apartment complex.
Now, Otis occupied 50% of new installation in Korea market. Iris have 'PM gearless machine' which don't need extra oil for lubrication so it is environmentally safe.
Also, without gear, it also have minimum noise and good riding feeling. Especially, invertor directly control motor so that the power consumption is down to 23% compare to geared traction machine. And, EMC(Electromagnetic Compatibility) filter equipped in control panel break external electronic pulse harm for elevator operation.

From the installation moment to future…Only keyword is ‘Safety’
Cheon Young Gil, installation team leader of Otis, sad “Iris make building more beautiful and perfect.” and added “After all, we focus on maintenance service to stabilize quality and performance so that we can get reliability from customers”.
Otis pick the most important word as safety. Otis pay attention to the safety from installation. CS 1 team in Gang-nam take a charge of maintenance service and one service man stand-by in the apartment complex.
Otis is renowned for inputting much time on safety from installation and carrying out education curriculum every month for installation worker. During installation, they set up 2nd and 3rd safety utility then start installation after supervisor confirmation. Mr. Cheon sad “Considering safety from installation is real safety” and added “We have absolutely superior system on that point of view comparing with other companies”.
Because of this back ground, Gang-nam installation team achieved an appreciation plaque from KESTI recently.

From the beginning of next year, newly revised European standards for lifts will be applied. Accordingly, whole the world pay attention to the new standards. Also, in Korea, KATS(Korea Agency of Technologies and Standards) show much interesting on the correct jurisdiction and interpretation of the standards.
On this, the place for studying the new standards EN115-1 which replacing EN115 was prepared.
40 more participants coming from business party, inspection institutes joined the seminar and this seminar is evaluated as helpful chance for elevator business.
The seminar was held with the presentation from Mr. Eddycasey who work for working group member of CEN/TC10 on 25th last month, in Education and Culture Center located in Yang-Jae dong, Seoul.
The one of main issue dealt by working group 2 is escalator&moving walk part, the new standards is upgraded and revised from EN115. The new standards was revised to include all the escalator standards, maintenance and risk measuring methods.
Especially, the new standard is classified as part so that it is easy to find the related sentence. For example, the safety related contents are in the 5 article of EN115-1.

"Continuous maintenance according to life cycle is solution for preventing accident"
The new standard focus on the countermeasure of safety related accidents. Meanwhile, in Europe, many accidents have been happened on the guide rail or handrail. So, the newly installed products according to the new standard shall have higher and wider guide to prevent these kinds of accidents.
Especially in Korea, skirt brush in escalator have been mandatory for preventing stuck accidents and no-skirt brushed escalators installed before 2004 have it through maintenance.
Mr. Eddycasey sad “In British union, the skirt brush have been mandatory for 25 years and the related accident rate is almost Zero” and added “These kinds of parts give much affect on preventing accidents but more important thing is maintenance according to life cycle”.
The new standard require new tests on steps and pallets. Meanwhile only press test is required but in new standard require side force and twisting analysis. Also, require alarm device for broken steps or pallets.
On the other hands, 'CEN/TC10' already transmitted new draft dated December 2005. From January next year, new draft which minimizing dispute will be issued. The new standard is already applied in some countries.
Mr. Eddycasey sad “After transient period by 2010, Europe will apply new standard”. So, old EN115 will be disappeared to history.

Korea Elevator Safety Technology Institute(president Song Ji-Tae, hereunder refer to as KESTI) carried out 2nd overseas training for inspectors with the 6 days schedule on elevator related system, technical standards and inspection standards visiting renowned companies in Japan.
This training was cooperated with Japan construction facility·elevator center role as elevator certification body, Tokyo Elevator Safety Association and Hitachi building system, Toshiba elevator.
The main curriculum is as follows, explanation of elevator related system in Japan,
Inspection standards and methods, site training, site tour in Hitachi tokyo training center and Toshiba elevator installation site (Tokyo city hall, Izmi garden tower, Ritzcarlton hotel).
